A single Hertz Fellowship requires $35,000 to $45,000 annual funding.
Only 14% of the annual budget goes to activities other than the support
of the Fellows. Many of our activities such as candidate interviewing
are volunteer-based. Were we able to support double the number
of Fellows, most overhead costs would remain fixed and the overhead
rate would decrease correspondingly.
Hertz Fellows represent a significant fraction of the nation's top 1%
of applied science and engineering talent. Each year we identify more
candidates than we can support. Recently the Foundation launched a major
a initiative to obtain the resources to support all worthy finalists.
In July 2005 the Foundation became a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity
to facilitate corporate, foundation and individual donations.
